Tips for first time spa owners

Last year my wife and I purchased our first home.  We were extremely excited as we knew with all the fun would come a lot of learning experiences–especially since the house had a hot tub!  So I thought I’d throw together a list of tips for first time spa owners and hopefully save some people time and money(local spa maintenance dudes charge 70$/hour).

  1. Change the water every 2-3 months depending on use.
  2. Make sure you check and maintain chemical levels.
  3. DON’T BE A CHEAP/DUMB ASS AND ONLY USE 1/2 GALLON OF RV ANTI-FREEZE THINKING THAT IS ENOUGH TO PROTECT YOUR WIMPY PLASTIC PIPES FROM FREEZING IN A STATE WHERE YOU CAN GET FROSTBITE JUST FROM BEING OUTSIDE FOR A FEW MINUTES DURING ONE OF THE “COLD” MONTHS!

Phew….glad I got that out.  Okay, so full disclosure here.  I’m the dumbass who only used 1/2 gallon of anti-freeze.  And I’m the cheap ass who has spent the last 3.5 months trying to fix the cracked pipe myself instead of shelling out some big bucks.   Here is what I had to deal with:

There are 2 close-ups of the area I had to fix.  It’s located towards the middle of the tub’s base.  I could barely reach one arm back there to work on everything.  Man, what a project.  But after 22$ of material, maybe 10-15 hours of labor, countless weird looks from my neighbors as they watched my butt crack hang out of the hot tub….it’s done!

People ask me: Was it worth all the work? I just smile and nod.
